Why Chad?

The day after Carlo and I returned from the USA in November 2012 a surprise e-mail landed in Carlo’s inbox.  A surveyor, an ex-colleague of Carlo’s from Cape Town, was trying to track him down.  Hans Coetzee and Carlo have not seen or spoken to each other for about 15 years.  Hans, an experienced and very capable surveyor, has long since left Cape Town and has been working all over the world, including Iraq and Kazakstan.  Now he finds himself in Chad in central Africa and he needs help in the form of a french speaking surveyor with training capabilities …….. come in Carlo!

So after many e-mails, phone calls and protracted negotiations with a Chadian engineering company here we are deep in the heart of  Africa.  Carlo’s mission is to assess a team of young, enthusiastic, french speaking, black surveyors; to teach them, to introduce methodology and to establish an efficient surveying department.  The task is going to be a logistical challenge because head office and our house are in the capital of Chad, N’Djamena, whereas the engineering project and the surveyors are 450 kilometers away in the southern town of Moundou.  These two towns are 6 hours away by road, and rough roads only negotiable in daylight hours!

This blog follows our trial and tribulations from before we leave our comfortable base in Provence,  France and follows us week by week as we learn to live our very different African lives.  These lives take us far out of our comfort zones and remind us just what we so take for granted living in Europe.  The pace is fast and furious and from day one the adventures begin …….the rest is in the Blog so I hope you enjoy journeying with us on what is going to be quite a voyage into an unfamiliar world.
